A Thanksgiving Prayer – Catholic Style

On Thursday of this week, those of us in the United States will celebrate the holiday of Thanksgiving.? It is a day set aside to give thanks for the many blessings we have received in our lives.? While we usually?find it?easy to be thankful for our material possessions, we?sometimes?take our spiritual blessings for granted.? While thumbing through an old prayer book (The Blessed Sacrament Prayer Book by Father Lasance), I ran across this great prayer of thanksgiving that is designed to be said each morning.? These words help us to recall those gifts which should never be forgotten.

O my God, I most humbly thank Thee for all the favors Thou hast bestowed upon me up to the present moment.? I give Thee thanks from the bottom of my heart that Thou hast created me after Thine own image and likeness, that Thou hast redeemed me by the precious blood of Thy dear Son, and that Thou has preserved me and brought me safe to the beginning of another day.? I offer to Thee, O Lord, my whole being, and in particular all my thoughts, words, actions, and sufferings of this day.? I consecrate them all to the glory of Thy name, beseeching Thee that through the infinite merits of Jesus Christ, my Saviour, they may all find acceptance in Thy sight.? May Thy divine love animate them, and may they all tend to Thy greater glory.? Amen.?

Who Says Miracles Don’t Happen?

On October 31st, I received this email from my friend Mary Ann:

Hello Gary: I?have a?prayer request for you please. My husband just called me and told me of a friend of ours, Melissa, who is pregnant and due in January.? She was just told that she has breast cancer and it is an aggressive kind.? They are going to take her baby early at 34 weeks so they may start chemo therapy and radiation asap.? This poor girl is such a mess right now.? She called to ask for prayers. That is all she wants right now.? She has another 2 year old child.? I know she is devastated with this news.

I immediately posted the request on my Facebook fan page and many people agreed to pray.? The prayer request was posted on other pages such as one devoted to?Mary’s Miraculous Medal.? On Monday of this week,? I received another?update:

Hello Gary: I have an update on Melissa! The doctor saw that Melissa was not as far along in her pregnancy as first thought, so that meant if they waited to deliver it would prolong her breast cancer treatment.? Her doctor decided to remove the tumor.? During the surgery the doctor was pleased to find out that the cancer did not spread to the lymph nodes. He believes now that he will not have to do a mastectomy.? She will need radiation and chemo after her baby is born, but the prognosis is much better now!? I know that all of the prayers helped. Everything looked so grim and now Melissa is so relieved!? Thank you for asking your listeners for prayers and for notifying the Miraculous Medal page also.? Melissa was truly amazed of all the prayers!

Great news, right?? It gets even better.? Here is an update from earlier today:

Hi Gary: Melissa just called my husband and told him that her doctor told her yesterday that she is cancer free!!!!? The tumor they removed was cancer, but they were able to remove all of it! ?The other nodule that was under her arm was not cancer!!? The doctor found that out yesterday. This is truly wonderful.? She called my husband to tell him that when she read my post about what you did with all of the prayer requests she just cried and cried!? Now, she called my husband this morning and said, “I know that it was all of those prayers that made this happen!”? Praise God! I just wanted you to hear this from Melissa!

What do think about that news…is that great, or what?!? While?some will?call this a coincidence or give all the credit to the doctors, we know better.? We know that there is one doctor who cured this?woman and?his?name is Doctor Jesus.? We also know that His nurse, Nurse?Blessed Mother?Mary, provided assistance with her intercession.??

Although the?Lord doesn’t always?perform?physical?healings, stories like?this remind?us that?He can do them.??Let this be a reminder to all of us that prayer really does work.? Thank you, Lord, for allowing Melissa to be?healed of the cancer.? Please continue to?heal her and allow her to have a safe delivery.

Thank You, Jesus!

Why Everyone Should Be Catholic!

Disclaimer: If you’re expecting?a long, detailed theological dissertation, let me apologize in advance.? Being somewhat of a simple minded person, I’m going to present a basic reason why I believe everyone should be Catholic.?? On a very broad level, everyone should be Catholic because the Catholic Church contains the fullness of truth.? However, since this can be a little abstract, I’m going to offer a reason that is a little easier to grasp.?

One of the great things about being a Catholic is our belief in the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist.? Just to make sure that everyone understands me, let me elaborate a bit.? In the Eucharist, what looks like a round piece of bread (or a wafer) and what appears to be wine is actually Jesus.? You got it, it’s REALLY Him – Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity!? It’s not a representation, it’s not some sort of spiritual presence, but it is actually Jesus Christ.? As a member of the Catholic Church, I get to pray before Him and receive Him every day!? If your “fluff meter” is going off, I suggest you back up and read this last paragraph again.? I wasn’t speaking figuratively and I wasn’t referring to anything abstract.? As a Catholic, I take Jesus at His word (John 6:22-71) and believe that He is fully present in the Eucharist.? It’s Him!

This past?Saturday night, as I do?each week, I visited the local adoration chapel and prayed before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.? Before doing so, I put?out a?notice on Facebook asking for prayer requests.? As usual, I got a few responses, but most ignored the offer (By the way, don’t tell anyone,? but even?though many of my Facebook friends ignore the invitation, I pray for them anyway.? After all, what kind of friend would I be if I saw Jesus face to face and didn’t put in a good word for them?).? Interestingly enough, one person replied with a “thanks, but no thanks” indicating that he’ll talk to Jesus Himself.? While that is strongly encouraged and definitely possible, I replied that unless you’re Catholic and believe in the Real Presence, you’re passing up meeting the Lord in person and settling for?a “phone call” or “email”? instead.? As expected, he disagreed and made a comment about tolerance and love.? We did agree to pray for each other, but I got the feeling that I should write some more.

As baptized Catholics, we are all called to evangelize (sorry, fellow Catholics, but it’s true!) and that means sharing the “Good News” of our Faith with others.? Unfortunately, some people don’t want to hear what we have to say.? There’s no getting around this.? It happened to the prophets and it even happened to Jesus.? As Catholics, we believe that we have the fullness of truth and that our Church was founded by Christ (Matthew 16:18).? Why wouldn’t we want to share that truth with others, especially if it gives them a chance to TRULY meet Jesus?? Again, no “phone calls”, “letters” or “emails”, I’m talking about a chance to REALLY meet HIM!? I would have to be a real jerk to keep that to myself!?

My statement that “everyone should be Catholic” doesn’t mean that I think I’m better than anyone or part of an exclusive club.? Rather, it means that I’ve found the “pearl of great price” and I want to share it with others.? In other words,? I’d like to invite everyone to become a member of the Church founded by Christ.? In the meantime, if you’re not a Catholic and you don’t want to be, you better believe that I’ll be tolerant of your beliefs.? In fact, I’ll be happy to pray for you and ask you to pray for me. We can even discuss the beliefs that we share in common.? And when I visit Jesus each week, I’m still going to put in a good word for you.?

If?you decide that you want to meet the Lord in person, contact your local Catholic parish or send me an email (gary@followingthetruth.com).

One Of The Best Night Prayers You’ll Ever Find…

If you’re looking for something to say to the Lord before you go to sleep, you may want to try this prayer by Saint Alphonsus Liguori.? It’s one of the nicest that I’ve seen.

A Night Prayer by Saint Alphonsus Liguori

Jesus Christ, my God,?I adore Thee and I?thank Thee for all the graces Thou hast bestowed on me this day.??I offer Thee my sleep and every moment of this night, and I?beseech Thee to keep me free from sin.?Therefore?I?place myself in Thy most sacred side and under the protecting mantle of our Lady, my mother.? May Thy holy angels help me and keep me in peace, and may Thy blessing be upon me.? Amen.

Happy Birthday To My Miracle Girls!

Fourteen years ago, on this day, my wife Eileen and I were?at Our Lady of Lourdes hospital (in Camden, NJ), getting ready to become parents for the first time.? After several months of hearing that it would be unlikely that our twins would be born alive, the doctors felt that delivering them 3 months early would give them the best odds for survival.? On October 27, 1997, Mary (1.5 lbs) and Elizabeth (2.5 lbs) entered the world!

For those of you who don’t believe in miracles, Eileen and I can tell you that they DO happen.? As evidence, I offer the above picture of 2 healthy young ladies who weren’t?supposed to live. ?Although it’s easy to panic when we encounter life’s difficulties, it’s important to remember that “with God nothing will be impossible” (Luke 1:37).? As we celebrate the fourteenth anniversary of their birth,?we are grateful to Almighty God for allowing Mary and Elizabeth to be a part of our life.? They are a blessing, not?only to us, but also to everyone?who knows them!?

Happy 14th Birthday, Mary and Elizabeth…WE LOVE YOU!!!

Book Review: Extreme Makeover – Teresa Tomeo Really Gets It!

Be sure to listen to Following The Truth on October 26, 2011 at 8 PM Eastern as I’ll be interviewing Teresa Tomeo about Extreme Makeover!

When?I first heard about Teresa Tomeo’s new book from Ignatius Press, Extreme Makeover (Women Transformed By Christ, Not Conformed To The Culture), I assumed that it would be a “woman’s book”.? Accepting that fact, I still wanted to read it in order that I could recommend it to the ladies.? After reading this book, however, I was pleased to discover that everyone (including men) can benefit from her powerful message.

One of the?main reasons I appreciate Teresa Tomeo’s work?is that she just flat out “gets” the Catholic Church and the culture in which we live.? More importantly, she understands that they are at odds with each other.? Society tells us to “do whatever feels good” and the Church tells us to imitate the example of Jesus.? The media tells us that the Church is “old fashioned” and that babies are an inconvenience while the Church reminds us that truth doesn’t change and that life is a precious gift from God.

I found this book difficult to put down.? In the opening chapter (What’s a Girl Like Me Doing in a Church Like This?), Teresa gives her personal testimony and offers first hand proof that “the Truth will set you free” (John 8:32).? That “Truth”, of course, is found in Jesus Christ and His Catholic Church.? In the pursuit of happiness and freedom, Tomeo bought into the lies put forth by the media: career first, total self centeredness, and the irrelevance of the Church.? Now, after finding out for herself?that this approach won’t bring happiness or even freedom, she can honestly declare that “God and His Church have it right”!

As she presents the various topics such as the “abortion distortion”?and the “contraception deception”, we learn of the many instances where the media misleads us in order to further their own biased message.? Did you ever think about where the term “pro-choice” came from?? Tomeo provides a little history and enlightens us that this was a carefully selected choice of words designed to take the focus away from the horror of abortion.? Coversely, those of us who support life are consistently described by the media as being “anti-abortion” or “anti-choice”.? These terms were also deliberately chosen by abortion supporters (and the media)??in an attempt to promote their agenda and characterize us as negative and against “choice”.? As for the “contraception deception”,? Teresa doesn’t hold back as she proclaims that “the Church is spot-on when she says contraception is a barricade to true intimacy and openness between spouses and between them and God”.? She supports this argument with sound research and first-hand knowledge, providing a much needed rebuttal to the message proclaimed?every day by the media.??

One of the most powerful?topics in this book deals with Jesus, His Church, and the Dignity of Women.? When was the last time you heard?the all male priesthood defended by the?media,?especially by a woman???Teresa devotes an entire chapter to the Church as a defender of women’s dignity.? There is no way I can do it justice, so I’ll simply say that she makes her point articulately, convincingly and with lots of references to Church documents.? As further proof of the fact that she “gets” the Church,?Tomeo includes the much underutilized sacrament of reconciliation as part of her Spiritual Beauty Plan for women.? Well done!

Rounding off this book are personal testimonies from?several women who have come to appreciate the beauty and truth found in the Catholic Church.? As a man, I can speak to women about these topics 24 hours a day, but the message is?a hundred times more powerful when it comes from other women.? I?strongly recommend this book for all women as it presents?the truth that?you won’t get from watching TV.? As for men, I?urge you to buy this book for the women?in your life, but make sure?you read it first…there’s a lot you can learn from it too!

Be Not Afraid!

Be Not Afraid!

As we celebrate the feast of Blessed Pope John Paul II today, let’s remember the famous words repeated 3 times during his installation homily.? First spoken by Our Lord, these words are something we all need to hear on a daily basis.? They remind us that, despite problems and uncertainty, Jesus is always beside us to provide comfort.? Another source of help can be observed on JPII’s papal coat of arms.? The “M” next to the cross reminds us that our Blessed Mother Mary is?always found next to the Cross.? No greater example of this can be found than her presence at the crucifixion of?Jesus?(John 19:25).? Jesus and Mary know every problem we are facing and will provide us with the graces needed to endure.

Blessed Pope John Paul II, pray for us!

DVD Review: Mary, Mother Of Our Century (John Paul II At Marian Shrines)

In a previous post, I mentioned that I was one of 10 Catholic bloggers chosen by CCC of America?to review the newly released DVD series, John Paul II – The Man, The Pope, And His Message.? The volume that I’ll be looking at is Mary, Mother of Our Century (John Paul II at Marian Shrines).? Not only do I consider it an honor to be?chosen to participate in this project, but?I consider myself especially blessed to be?asked to discuss the Marian devotion of the late Holy Father.

Aside from the fact that we’re both Polish (boy, were my parents happy when he was elected!), Blessed Pope John Paul II and I share something else in common.? We both made the Total Consecration of our lives to Jesus through Mary, as popularized by St. Louis de Montfort.? As pointed out in the DVD, when?JPII?was a young man, he carried Montfort’s book (True Devotion To Mary) everywhere he went.??This devotion was?extremely important to him and greatly influenced his life.

As I watched this 3o minute episode (the entire set consists of 10 30-minute?segments), it was easy to see the Holy Father’s?love for the Blessed?Mother.? I relived his trips to Marian shrines in such locations as Fatima, Lourdes, Guadalupe and Czestochowa as he gave us an example of what it means to be truly devoted to Mary.? In each of these locations, he re-consecrated himself, the country that he was visiting, and?the world to Mary and her Immaculate Heart.

One of the most profound statements in the film was the Holy Father’s comment, “To those who strive to know and Love Him, Christ reveals His Mother as He revealed her to His disciple John from the Cross”.? Sadly, many Christians ignore this monumental event that took place while Jesus was dying on the Cross.? Can you imagine the effort it took for Our Lord to utter the words, “Behold your Mother” (John 19:27)?? JPII knew the significance of this gesture and, as a sign of?his love for Mary,?included an “M” next to?the cross on his official coat of arms.

Many of us have been inspired by the holiness of others – your grandmother who faithfully prayed? her rosary each day, the elderly man who bows his head in prayer after daily Mass, your coworker who always has a positive attitude and a kind word.? Watching JPII as he traveled to the various Marian shrines had this same kind of effect on me and filled me with gratitude for the gift of our Blessed Mother.? Watching these visits, observing his actions and listening to his words caused?me to reflect on my own relationship with Mary.? Do I love her enough?? Do I speak with her frequently?? Do I ask her to lead me closer to Jesus?? Am I utilizing her intercessory power?

Do you ever wish that you could see and hear some of the great saints such as St. Francis of Assisi, St. Anthony of Padua and St. Teresa of Avila?? While we can read their writings and the details of their lives, we can’t actually see and hear them.??In?this DVD?series, we are blessed with the opportunity to watch the actions and hear the words?of a ?future saint!? If you’re tired of all the garbage on TV and are looking for?worthwhile programming that will inspire and entertain the whole family, I strongly encourage you to look into this DVD set.?

Do you know someone who would like a copy of this DVD series???CCC?of America is hosting a contest: JP II, They?Love You!??Visit the website http://johnpaulseries.com for details about how you can nominate someone to win a free copy of the series or purchase your own copy.
