Good Counsel Homes ? Saving Lives Every Day!

Last night, I had the pleasure of attending a reception for Good Counsel Homes, an organization that provides shelter for homeless pregnant women. Founded in 1985 by Chris Bell and Fr. Benedict Groeschel, Good Counsel currently runs 5 homes in the New York City area and is hoping to open one in South Jersey.

I was honored to meet Mr. Bell, whose passion for the pro-life cause is contagious. He told story after story of unmarried pregnant women who were shunned by their families and told to abort their unborn children. Good Counsel Homes takes these women in and gives them an alternative to abortion. Countless children are alive today due to their efforts.

I ask you to keep them in your prayers. If at all possible, please also consider supporting them financially. You can visit their website at www.goodcounselhomes.org for more information or to make a donation.

What an honor it is to be able to help save a life!

Notre Dame?s Fr. John Jenkins ? ?Smarter? Than 79 United States Bishops?

Today was a day that saddened many faithful Catholics, as the most pro-abortion president in U.S. history, Barack Obama, received an honorary degree and addressed the graduates at the University of Notre Dame. Fr. John Jenkins, the University president, has ignored the objections of 79 United States Bishops (HERE is the current list), who objected to the invitation, on the grounds that Obama?s support of abortion on demand is not compatible with Catholic teaching.

For some reason, Fr. Jenkins thinks that he knows better than 79 of the men who lead the Church, as the modern day successors to the Apostles. Fr. Jenkins has chosen to disregard the advice of these Church leaders because he has a ?better idea?. In his introduction of President Obama, Jenkins quoted Pope Benedict XVI and Vatican II documents, but ultimately decided that granting an honorary degree to Obama is the best way to express displeasure with the President?s support of abortion.

Fr. Jenkins also feels that he is more knowledgeable than one of the highest ranking Vatican officials, Archbishop Raymond Burke, who referred to the Obama invitation as a ?great scandal?. Burke, the prefect of the Apostolic Signatura (the Vatican’s highest court), recently told Catholics at a national prayer breakfast in Washington, D.C., that “with unparalleled arrogance, our nation is choosing to renounce its foundation on the faithful.”

Since Fr. Jenkins knows ?better? than the Vatican and 79 U.S. Bishops about how to express opposition to Obama?s extreme pro-abortion position, what exactly was his ?master plan?? In his introductory remarks today, Fr. Jenkins stated that, ??President Obama has come to Notre Dame, though he knows well that we are fully supportive of Church teaching on the sanctity of human life, and we oppose his policies on abortion and embryonic stem cell research.? Taken out of context, it appears as if Jenkins is repudiating Obama for his anti-life position, but looking at the remainder of his speech illustrates that he is actually praising him for having the courage to visit the university in spite of all the controversy. Jenkins then continues with a series of comments that make it sound like Obama is being canonized a saint?

??Others might have avoided this venue for that reason. But President Obama is not someone who stops talking to those who differ with him. Mr. President: This is a principle we share.

As the Fathers of the Second Vatican Council wrote in their pastoral constitution Gaudium et Spes: ?Respect and love ought to be extended also to those who think or act differently than we do in social, political and even religious matters. In fact, the more deeply we come to understand their ways of thinking through such courtesy and love, the more easily will we be able to enter into dialogue with them.?

If we want to extend courtesy, respect and love ? and enter into dialogue ? then surely we can start by acknowledging what is honorable in others.

We welcome President Obama to Notre Dame, and we honor him for the qualities and accomplishments the American people admired in him when they elected him. He is a man who grew up without a father, whose family was fed for a time with the help of food stamps — yet who mastered the most rigorous academic challenges, who turned his back on wealth to serve the poor, who sought the Presidency at a young age against long odds, and who ? on the threshold of his goal — left the campaign to go to the bedside of his dying grandmother who helped raise him.

He is a leader who has great respect for the role of faith and religious institutions in public life. He has said: ?Secularists are wrong when they ask believers to leave their religion at the door before entering into the public square.?

He is the first African American to be elected President, yet his appeal powerfully transcends race. In a country that has been deeply wounded by racial hatred ? he has been a healer.

He has set ambitious goals across a sweeping agenda — extending health care coverage to millions who don?t have it, improving education especially for those who most need it, promoting renewable energy for the sake of our economy, our security, and our climate.

He has declared the goal of a world without nuclear weapons and has begun arms reduction talks with the Russians.

He has pledged to accelerate America?s fight against poverty, to reform immigration to make it more humane, and to advance America?s merciful work in fighting disease in the poorest places on earth.

As commander-in-chief and as chief executive, he embraces with confidence both the burdens of leadership and the hopes of his country.

Ladies and Gentlemen: The President of the United States? “

Does this sound like the speech of someone who truly believes in the Catholic teaching that abortion is murder? I?m in no position to question Fr. Jenkins? beliefs, but it?s similar to inviting Saddam Hussein to give a commencement address and stating that although you disagree with his mass executions, you really admire his jobs plan. It?s simply ludicrous. As Catholics, we can not condone Obama?s support of the murder of the unborn?period!

Are there any positives that can come out of this? Absolutely. For one thing, at least 79 U.S. bishops have expressed opposition to this scandal. Another positive is that this Obama?s pro-abortion position has gotten greater publicity. Despite what he says about wanting to ?reduce abortions?, his policies prove otherwise and hopefully the public will become more aware of this fact. Thirdly, it makes us aware of the need to pray for our country. The fact that unborn children are being murdered every day under the guise of ?freedom of choice? should infuriate us all. Lastly, we should use this incident as a reminder to pray for the conversion of all those who don?t see abortion as the holocaust that it is.

Through the intercession of Our Lady (?Notre Dame?), let us beseech Almighty God to change people?s heart and put an end to the horror of abortion. Amen.

Jesus: ?If They Persecuted Me, They Will Also Persecute You?

The Lord wasn?t kidding when He uttered these words in John 15:20. Any Catholic who stands up for their faith has experienced this to some degree. Today?s society will tolerate religion up until the point that you attempt to tell someone that their behavior is immoral. Once you do that, the verbal or physical persecution begins.

One of the beautiful things about the Catholic Faith is that her dogmatic teachings do not change. For those looking for the one, true Church founded by Christ this is a compelling piece of evidence. After all, the truth is the truth?Jesus identified Himself as ?the Way, the Truth, and the Life? and one wouldn?t expect that truth to change as society?s values become more permissive and immoral.

As for being persecuted, The Catholic Church certainly experiences it?s share. Why? Because the Church?s teachings don?t change according to public opinion and the world doesn?t like that one bit. People don?t want to be told that abortion, artificial birth control, premarital sex, embryonic stem cell research, gay ?marriage?, etc. are immoral because they find it too restrictive. Fortunately, The Catholic Church continues to teach the truth and doesn?t care what the world thinks. That?s good because that?s exactly what Christ did?and the world hated Him for it!

Keep this in mind as you watch all of the press coverage for Barack Obama?s appearance at Notre Dame University this weekend. The Church will once again come ?under fire? from the liberal media, but that?s ok? we can?t say we weren?t warned!

Notre Dame Mission Statement: ??Drawing Inspiration From Jesus??

The Catholic community and Catholic institutions should not honor those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles. They should not be given awards, honors or platforms which would suggest support for their actions. (Catholics in Political Life ? United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, June 2004)

A Catholic university draws its basic inspiration from Jesus Christ as the source of wisdom and from the conviction that in him all things can be brought to their completion. As a Catholic university, Notre Dame wishes to contribute to this educational mission. (University of Notre Dame Mission Statement from their website, 2009)

On Sunday, in defiance of the United States bishops? direction, abortion supporter Barack Obama will receive an honorary award from the University of Notre Dame. University President Fr. John Jenkins , who declined interview requests, has said Notre Dame does not support Obama’s positions on issues regarding the protection of human life but that his appearance provides “a basis for further positive engagement.”
I ask you to look at the above statement by the USCCB, especially the part which states ?They should be not given awards?? Now look at the Notre Dame Mission statement which states, ?A Catholic university draws its basic inspiration from Jesus Christ as the source of wisdom?? Is it just me, or is there a contradiction here?

Over 70 Catholic bishops have spoken out against Notre Dame?s decision and Fr. Jenkins still feels ?confident in his decision?. Somehow I don?t think that the ?wisdom of Jesus Christ? (which Notre Dame claims as its inspiration) would support opposing the teaching of the successors to the Apostles (the Bishops). Would Our Lord really approve of this type of defiance?
Over the next few days, we?ll be hearing a lot about this story. Don?t let the media ?spin? distract you from the true issue here ? disobedience to Christ and His Church. Please pray for Fr. Jenkins? he is out on a very shaky limb right now and would have a difficult time explaining his decision to Jesus if necessary.

St. Matthias And Apostolic Succession

Today the Church celebrates the feast of St. Matthias, arguably the least known of the Apostles. While not one of the original 12 chosen by Our Lord, Matthias was elected as a replacement for Judas after he committed suicide. You can read all about his election in Chapter 1 of the Acts of the Apostles (click HERE).

One of the most important principles that this Bible passage illustrates is that of Apostolic Succession. It serves as proof that The Lord (speaking through Peter, the first pope) intended for the apostolic ministry to be continued throughout the ages. To this day, the Catholic Church remains faithful to His wishes by the election of bishops, the modern day successors to the Apostles.

You might want to mention this in case you run into anyone who is still searching for the true Church, founded by Christ?

We?re still doing things the same way 2000 years later!

Our Lady Of Fatima

On May 13, 1917 The Blessed Mother made the first of several appearances to 3 children in Fatima, Portugal. Her message included conversion of heart, repentance from sin and a dedication to her, especially through praying the Rosary. Today the Church officially celebrates the memorial of this event.
While not obligated to believe these apparitions, I would encourage all Catholics to open your hearts to Our Lady?s message. May is the month traditionally dedicated to Mary and it would be the perfect time to begin saying the rosary. As our late Holy Father, Pope John Paul II stated in his Apostolic Letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae, ?To recite the Rosary is nothing other than to contemplate with Mary the face of Christ.?
If you?d like to learn more about the rosary, EWTN has a web page (click HERE) on its origin, scripture references and instructions on how it is said.

A ?Different? Kind Of Peace

In the First Reading from today?s Mass, Paul and Barnabas state, ?It is necessary for us to undergo many hardships to enter the kingdom of God.? (Acts 14:22). Considering that the previous day Paul was stoned and left for dead, he ought to know! Contrast that with Jesus statement in today?s Gospel where He says ?Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid? (Jn 14:27). How do you think St. Paul feels about that statement after he was stoned?

I haven?t spoken with him directly, but I?m sure Paul would have no problem with the words of Our Lord. In his letter to the Philippians , Paul states ?Rejoice in the Lord always. I shall say it again: rejoice! Your kindness should be known to all. The Lord is near. Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.? (Phil 4:4-7). I know what you?re thinking?Maybe he was having a good day when he said that. In actuality, Paul was in prison when he composed that letter! Ok?what?s the deal?

The ?deal? is that Christ provides a unique brand of peace to His followers; a peace that does not depend on external circumstances. The Lord?s peace can be felt whether you are in the midst of unemployment, sickness or on a relaxing vacation. It is a peace that transcends all worldly events. How is it that we don?t feel peaceful in the midst of turmoil, even if we are followers of Christ? Most often, it?s because we don?t trust Him. We are so busy rebelling against His will that we don?t allow His peace to infiltrate our hearts.

Twelve years ago my twin daughters, Mary and Elizabeth, were not expected to be born alive. It was very hard for my wife and I not to worry as we pursued various treatment options designed to save their lives. When the doctors just about ran out of ideas, they suggested a potential ?last ditch? treatment that may have resulted in the death of one or both girls. After praying about it for a few days, we decided to forego this risky course of action and trust in the healing power of God. When we informed the doctors of our decision, we immediately felt a sense of peace come over us. It appeared as if the doctors felt it as well. It turns out that this was a good move, as The Lord allowed the girls to be born shortly thereafter. Today they are beautiful, healthy children.

To this day, that was one of the most tumultuous, yet peaceful, times of my life. I was truly able to trust in God, although common sense told me otherwise. If any of you are going through a difficult time, I urge you to cling to the words of Our Lord when He said, ?Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid?. Ask Him to increase your trust and to send His peace to calm your fears. It really works if you give it a try!

The Fall Of A Priest?Celibacy Isn?t The Problem!

I don?t normally like to write about Church scandals, but this story is getting so much press that it shouldn?t be ignored. A famous Miami priest, Fr. Alberto Cutie, was recently was recently photographed on a beach in some very compromising positions with a lady friend. When these pictures became public, Fr. Alberto was removed as head of the Miami archdiocese’s international radio network and relieved of his pastoral duties at his local parish. Appearing on CBS? Early Show this morning, Fr. Alberto made the announcement that he is considering leaving the priesthood to get married. He also made a surprising statement that I totally agree with, ?I believe that celibacy is good, and that it’s a good commitment to God.?

As expected, this story has opened the floodgates for those who feel that priests should be allowed to get married. But celibacy isn?t the real problem in this case. When a priest is ordained he makes a promise to remain celibate forever ? not just until he meets the right woman. When I got married, I made a promise to stay married forever ? not just until someone ?better? comes along. Why should we believe that someone who would ignore his priestly promise of celibacy (as Father Cutie has admitted to doing for the past 2 years), would remain faithful to his marriage vows? Married priests who would abandon their marriage vows would do as much damage as those who would disregard their promise of celibacy. We would simply be trading one scandal for another.

So why am I writing this post? I assure you it?s not to condemn Father Alberto. Instead, I ask you to pray for him?he could really use it. My main purpose is to speak out against the opinion of some that we should be ?happy? for him. There is never anything to celebrate when a man who has pledged to be faithful to Holy Mother Church goes back on that promise. It?s not as if he decided to make this decision before he committed his life to the priesthood. He agreed to the conditions of the priesthood and decided that an earthly pleasure was more important. This is every bit as tragic as when a married man or woman abandons his/her spouse and family. It?s actually worse because it involves someone who is voluntarily forfeiting the privilege of changing bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Our Lord and forgiving sins in His name because he decided that something else (the companionship of a woman) is more important.

What this story illustrates is how strongly Satan attacks the priesthood. Why the priesthood? If a priest commits public scandal, it?s very likely to affect many others. Catholics could even leave the Church because of this. People will be deprived of the Eucharist and Confession. We can be sure that Satan has a big smile on his face and that?s not good.

Please pray for Father Alberto and all of our priests.

?O wonderful the dignity of priests; in whose hands the Son of God is made flesh as in the womb of the Virgin.? (St. Augustine)

Mary And The Importance Of Motherhood

Tomorrow we celebrate Mothers Day, a good time to reflect on the sanctity of motherhood. Unfortunately, today?s society tells us that unless a woman has a job outside of the home, they aren?t living up to their full potential. That?s a really sad point of view because it diminishes the importance of motherhood, an extremely noble vocation.

I am blessed (as are my children) that my wife, Eileen, has always understood the importance of being a mother. She makes many sacrifices daily so that our girls are completely provided for and our household runs smoothly. I get to go the office everyday and work in a very structured environment, but Eileen has chosen to forego that convenience and make sure that things are stable at home. I am grateful for her selflessness and am blessed to have her as my wife.

Perhaps the greatest role model for mothers is Mary, Our Blessed Mother. She never pushed to become an apostle or pursue a role of prominence in her Son?s ministry. Instead, she always obeyed God?s will, even when it wasn?t easy. She knew that it?s ?not about her? and never attempted to steal the spotlight from Jesus. At the wedding at Cana she simply told the servers to ?do whatever He (Jesus) tells you? (Jn 2:5). As a reward for her constant obedience, she was assumed bodily into Heaven and reigns as the Queen of Heaven and Earth.

Let?s give thanks for all of our mothers this day and ask Our Blessed Mother to watch over and protect them.

Happy Mothers Day!
