"Do You Believe That I Can Do This?"

On tonight’s Following The Truth radio program, I read the account of Jesus and the two blind men (Mt 9:27-31). When the men approached Jesus and asked for healing, Our Lord replied, “Do you believe that I can do this?” They responded, “Yes, Lord”. After healing them, Jesus said “Let it be done for you according to your faith.”

When you present your intentions to the Lord, how would you respond to His question? If (like most of us) your answer is “I guess” or “Maybe” or “I’m not sure”, you should probably also ask for an increase of faith.

That simple request could be just what Jesus is waiting to hear…

Criticize The Church = Make Satan Happy!

Lately, I’ve noticed that it is impossible to read a newspaper or turn on the television without hearing allegations about various incidents of priestly abuse. While many of these crimes were committed several years ago, new allegations of “cover ups” appear on a daily basis. Judging by the online comments that seem to accompany each of these articles, many individuals associate the sinful acts of a very small percentage of Catholic clergy with “The Church”. As a result, they feel justified in criticizing and even leaving “The Church”.

Here is an article that I wrote for the new website, CatholicLane, that reminds the readers that whenever we criticize the Church, we make Satan very happy. While I’m not implying that the devil is responsible for each of these incidents, I can guarantee that he is very happy when someone criticizes or leaves the Church, especially if it results in the loss of a soul!

The importance of praying daily for our clergy cannot be overemphasized, as they are a prime target of the evil one who “is prowling around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. (1 Peter 5:8). Please read and share this article with your friends and family. Although we were assured by Christ that the Church will not be destroyed (Mt 16:18), the same cannot be said for the souls who separate themselves from her protection!

Is Your Church Built On Rock?

While doing my nightly radio show on BlogTalkRadio this evening, I was discussing the Parable of the Builders:

Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house. But it did not collapse; it had been set solidly on rock. And everyone who listens to these words of mine but does not act on them will be like a fool who built his house on sand. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house. And it collapsed and was completely ruined.” (Mt 7: 24-27)

Considering that today is the Feast of the Chair of Saint Peter, the following verse immediately came to mind:

And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” (Mt 16:18-19)

I don’t know how you feel, but I think it’s very hard to ignore the similarities between the 2 passages. As a Catholic, I’m glad my Church is built on the rock of Saint Peter. For as Our Lord promised, the forces of evil cannot prevail against her. If you are Catholic, that should make you feel really good. If you are not Catholic, please consider these Bible passages and let me know if you have any questions about the Catholic faith.

He Who Humbles Himself…

…will be exalted. (Lk 14:11)

Our Lord’s words remind of us the importance of humility to the Christian. When we look at the life of Jesus, we see evidence of one humiliation after another. If we are to follow in the Lord’s footsteps and live with Him in Heaven, we must learn to be humble.

Even though it’s often difficult to accept the answer, we should make it a daily practice to pray for increased humility. The following prayer, composed by Cardinal Merry del Val (Secretary of State for Pope Saint Pius X) is one of the most beautiful that I’ve seen:

Litany Of Humility

O Jesus! meek and humble of heart, Hear me.

From the desire of being esteemed,
Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being loved…
From the desire of being extolled …
From the desire of being honored …
From the desire of being praised …
From the desire of being preferred to others…
From the desire of being consulted …
From the desire of being approved …
From the fear of being humiliated …
From the fear of being despised…
From the fear of suffering rebukes …
From the fear of being calumniated …
From the fear of being forgotten …
From the fear of being ridiculed …
From the fear of being wronged …
From the fear of being suspected …

That others may be loved more than I,
Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be esteemed more than I …
That, in the opinion of the world,
others may increase and I may decrease …
That others may be chosen and I set aside …
That others may be praised and I unnoticed …
That others may be preferred to me in everything…
That others may become holier than I, provided that I may become as holy as I should?

Appreciating The "Gift" Of Suffering

St. Paul tells us that he “rejoices in his suffering” (Col 1:24) and St. Teresa of Avila stated that “suffering is a great favor”. While we’re in the midst of suffering, however, it’s very difficult to look at its positive aspects. I recently wrote an article for Catholic Exchange, in which I attempted to offer some suggestions for making the most of our crosses. Looking at suffering as a gift has helped me to find peace in my life. It’s my sincere wish that it helps you as well.

Jesus Is The Same Yesterday, Today And Forever!

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. (Hebrews 13:8)

When we read about Our Lord in the Bible and contemplate the miracles that He performed, we sometimes wish He was still available for consultation. If only we could touch the “hem of his garment”, wake Him during the storms of our lives or hear His words of wisdom our problems would vanish and all would be well.

The above statement from the Book of Hebrews reminds us nothing about Jesus has changed in 2000 years and nothing will ever change. He is still here in 2011, fully present in the Eucharist. We can also encounter Him by reading Sacred Scripture or by receiving the Sacraments. As Catholics, we believe that the tiny white host consecrated at every Mass is the SAME Jesus who walked the earth 2,000 years ago. His appearance is different, but it is still Him!

Don’t miss the opportunity to visit Him at the adoration chapel, to receive Him in Holy Communion as often as possible and to listen to His words spoken to us in the Bible. Tell Him your problems, share your anxieties, express your love for Him, thank Him for dying for your sins and take comfort in the fact that…

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and FOREVER!

The Gift Of Faith

By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance; he went out, not knowing where he was to go. (Heb 11:8)

He woke up, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Quiet! Be still!” The wind ceased and there was great calm. Then he asked them, “Why are you terrified? Do you not yet have faith?” (Mk 4:39-40)

How many times do we question events that take place in our lives? Sickness, death, unemployment, loneliness, betrayal…you name it and we have a problem with it. How can God do this to ME, how could I lose MY job, why doesn’t God answer MY prayers, things will never get better for ME… We often get so caught up in our own needs and problems, that we ignore Jesus’ instructions to “Be not afraid” (Jn 6:20). We forget that He is in charge of our lives and that He doesn’t make mistakes!

The readings from today’s Mass (Heb 11:1-2,8-19/Mk 4:35-41) remind us what it means to have faith. It involves trusting God ALWAYS, even when it doesn’t make sense. The Bible is full of people who trusted God under very difficult circumstances: Abraham, Moses, Abel, Enoch, Noah, Mary, Joseph, the centurion who requested healing for his servant, etc. While it is almost impossible if we try to do it on our own, asking God to increase our faith will have tremendous results. Today, no matter how much turmoil is taking place in your life, ask the Lord to increase your faith and see what happens!

Jesus said to him, ” ‘If you can!’ Everything is possible to one who has faith.” Then the boy’s father cried out, “I do believe, help my unbelief!” (Mk 9:23-24)

Criticized For Your Faith? You’re Not Alone…

Jesus came with his disciples into the house. Again the crowd gathered, making it impossible for them even to eat. When his relatives heard of this they set out to seize him,for they said, ?He is out of his mind.? (Mk 3:20-21)

One of the most common observations that I hear from devout Catholics is “my family thinks I’m crazy”. Now, depending on how your family and friends may treat their faith, that may not be such a bad thing 🙂

There is no doubt that, if you truly live your Catholic faith, you are going to ruffle some feathers. In fact, Jesus told us that following Him may cause division at times (Lk 12:51-53). We should take consolation in the fact that we’re in some pretty good company. For their sake, let’s hope those relatives of Jesus finally realized that He wasn’t “out of His mind”!

You Can’t Always Get What You Want

“You can’t always get what you want. But if you try sometimes, well you might find you’ll get what you need.” (The Rolling Stones)

I can say with almost absolute certainty that this is the first and last time that I’ll ever begin my blog with a line from a Rolling Stones song, but it just seemed to fit today’s message. In my work as a Catholic evangelist, one of the questions that I hear over and over is, “Why didn’t God answer my prayer?” Many people are devastated when God doesn’t answer their prayers. In reality, the cause of their frustration is not that God didn’t answer their prayers, but that He didn’t answer them in the way that they wanted!

A few days ago, my Mother-In-Law, Betty Moynahan, passed away from leukemia. For the past 6 months, I have been praying every day for her to be healed. Although it was difficult because I loved Betty, I left the details up to the Lord. I knew that He would heal her when and how He saw fit. After much suffering, the Lord completely healed Betty on January 19. Her leukemia is gone, the nausea, weakness and other symptoms have disappeared. Almighty God has healed her by allowing her to pass from this earthly life. Although our family is sad at the loss of our beloved mother and friend, we understand that God did indeed answer our prayer.

Almost everyone is familiar with Jesus’ promise, “Ask and it will be given you; seek and you will find; knock and it will be opened to you. For every one who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to Him who knocks it will be opened (Mt 7:7-8)”. However, we often miss Our Lord’s next sentence, “Or what man of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will Your Father who is in Heaven give good things to those who ask Him!” (Mt 7:9-11)

While it’s difficult for us to accept the fact that we often don’t know what’s best for us, coming to grips with that fact will bring us great peace. Ultimately, Our Lord grants us those things that are needed for our salvation. While we may never fully understand what we truly need, we can achieve a better understanding through prayer, reading Scripture, studying the teachings of the Church and receiving the Sacraments. Despite doing all these things, there will still be times when we just won’t know what is truly best for our salvation, but that’s OK…That’s God’s job!

Because of this, it never hurts to append our prayer with the words of Our Lord as He prayed in the garden:

“…nevertheless, not as I will, but as Thou will (Mt 26:39).”

?”We must understand, then, that even though God doesn’t always give us what we want, He gives us what we need for our salvation.” (St. Augustine of Hippo)
